Amman, April 16 (Petra) -- A spell of unstable weather marked by thunderstorms, dust, and fluctuating temperatures is set to dominate conditions through Friday, before a marked cooldown takes hold over the weekend, according to the Jordan Meteorological Department.
Temperatures on Thursday are running about 6–7 C above seasonal averages, with warm conditions prevailing across most regions and relatively hot weather in the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and Aqaba. Skies are turning increasingly unsettled, with clouds forming at multiple levels and scattered showers expected at intervals, particularly in southern and eastern areas.
Thunderstorms and hail remain possible. Winds are forecast to be southeasterly, ranging from moderate to active, with strong gusts at times lifting dust across wide areas, especially in the Badia. Rainfall activity is expected to ease gradually overnight.
The Meteorological Department warned of reduced visibility due to dust, particularly in desert regions, as well as the risks associated with thunderstorms and slippery roads. It also advised individuals with respiratory conditions to take precautions.
Conditions are expected to remain unstable on Friday, with a further slight increase in temperatures and continued cloud development from midday. Scattered showers are forecast across multiple regions, with the potential for thunderstorms and hail.
Rainfall may intensify during the evening and nighttime hours, particularly in eastern areas, raising the risk of flash flooding in valleys and low-lying areas. Winds will shift between southeasterly and southwesterly, remaining moderate to active with strong gusts that could further reduce visibility, especially on desert roads.
A notable shift is expected on Saturday, as a milder air mass moves into the region, driving a noticeable drop in temperatures. Conditions will turn pleasant across most regions, while low-lying areas remain relatively warm. Some cloud cover will persist, with a slight chance of light morning showers in limited southern and eastern areas. Winds will turn westerly and remain moderate, becoming active at times.
A further slight decline in temperatures is forecast on Sunday, with partly cloudy skies and mild conditions prevailing across most regions, while warmer weather continues in the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and Aqaba. Winds will shift northwesterly, remaining moderate with intermittent activity.
Temperature ranges on Thursday reflect the elevated levels, with East Amman forecast between 30 C and 17 C, and West Amman between 28 C and 15 C. Northern highlands will record 25 C to 15 C, while the Sharah highlands range between 26 C and 14 C.
In the Badia, temperatures are expected between 32 C and 16 C, and in the plains between 30 C and 16 C. The northern Jordan Valley is forecast at 35 C to 20 C, rising to 37 C to 24 C in the southern valley. The Dead Sea will record 36 C to 23 C, while Aqaba reaches 37 C to 23 C.
