UN Envoy Warns Yemen Has Entered a More Dangerous Phase of Conflict

New York, Sept. 10 (Petra) The U.N. Security Council held a session Thursday on the situation in Yemen at the request of Bahrain, hearing a briefing from the U.N. Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg.

Grundberg warned that Yemen was entering "a new and more dangerous phase" of the conflict, saying a return to large-scale fighting after the 2022 truce had now become a harsh reality.

"Fighting has intensified over the past 24 hours on several fronts, particularly along the strategic western coast," he said.

Ansar Allah launched a large-scale attack that included the city of Mokha, located about 75 km from the Bab al-Mandab Strait, which links the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and through which a significant share of global trade and energy supplies passes.

The U.N. envoy said Ansar Allah now controlled Mokha, giving the group a direct presence at the approaches to one of the world’s most important straits, despite continued fighting and a volatile situation. He said the development raised serious concerns among the international community over threats to freedom of navigation.

The renewed war not only threatens to plunge Yemen into a prolonged and expanding conflict, he added, but also carries the risk of drawing the country back into a wider regional confrontation that remains unresolved, potentially carrying global repercussions.
