Amman, Sept. 21 (Petra) -- An international workshop to support Gaza's health sector concluded in Amman with the adoption of a recovery and reconstruction roadmap and commitments of about $20 million for 30 health projects, the Specialty Hospital said in a statement.
The two-day workshop, held at the Specialty Hospital in coordination with the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza, brought together more than 20 international humanitarian organizations and institutions, in person and via video link, along with Jordanian officials and representatives of health and humanitarian institutions.
Participants discussed cooperation and expertise-sharing among the attending parties, as well as Gaza's urgent health needs and ways to strengthen the health and humanitarian response, according to the statement.
Participants included Iman Shankiti, World Health Organization representative in Jordan; Sahel Hammouri, Director-General of the Jordanian Royal Medical Services; Hussein Shibli, Secretary-General of the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization; and Mohammed Hadid, President of the Jordan Red Crescent Society, along with representatives of the participating international organizations.
Each reviewed the humanitarian role their institutions have played in supporting Gaza's health sector and their vision for strengthening cooperation and coordination.
Fawzi Hammouri, General Manager of the Specialty Hospital and Executive Chair of the Gaza Health Initiative, praised the participating institutions' efforts. He stressed the importance of strengthening partnership and coordination among health and humanitarian bodies, and of translating health needs into implementable projects in coordination with those providing health services in Gaza.
Hammouri said the workshop will become a periodic forum to review progress and implement commitments until Gaza's health system recovers and can resume serving residents of the Strip.
He pointed to Jordan's efforts, led by King Abdullah II, to support the Palestinian people generally and in Gaza specifically.
The Specialty Hospital hosted the workshop through its Gaza Health Initiative as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between international and national health and humanitarian institutions, and to build practical partnerships that support the recovery of Gaza's health sector and turn health priorities and needs into implementable projects.
