Cybersecurity Center Warns Against Fake Messages Amid Hacking Attempts

Amman, March 3 (Petra) -- The National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) announced it will not send any messages to Jordanians’ mobile phones at this stage, citing precautionary measures amid ongoing cyberattacks targeting the Kingdom.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the center said any awareness messages or warnings issued by the NCSC or other official institutions will be published exclusively through official statements from the Public Security Directorate (PSD) and its media spokesperson.

The NCSC said the move comes in light of hacking attempts and cyberattacks, some of which may misuse the name of the center or other official entities through text messages, electronic platforms or social media to mislead users and breach their devices.

It urged citizens not to interact with any warning messages or suspicious links falsely bearing the name of the center or any official institution, and to treat any such messages as hacking or phishing attempts.

The NCSC called on the public to follow preventive guidelines to avoid cyberattacks and electronic fraud, including refraining from opening any links or attachments received via SMS or messaging applications, particularly those claiming to offer "security updates," "prizes" or "financial aid." It also stressed never sharing passwords or credit card details via messages or phone calls, regardless of how official the source may appear.

The center emphasized that official security circulars are issued solely through the verified channels of the PSD and official government platforms with the ".jo" domain.

It also advised citizens to download and update applications only through authorized stores such as Google Play and the App Store, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on social media and banking applications, and regularly back up important data on devices not connected to the internet.

The center underlined that public awareness and adherence to these guidelines are fundamental to strengthening national cybersecurity.
