Amman, April 1 (Petra) -- Member of the Executive Committee of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union, MP Khaled Abu Hassan, participated on Wednesday in a meeting of the Executive Committee members, held via video conferencing (Zoom), to discuss the emergency item that the Arab Parliamentary Group will present during the 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, scheduled to be held from the 15th to the 19th of the current month.
The meeting focused on coordinating Arab positions on developments in regional and international situations and their implications for the region, given the accelerating global challenges.
Abu Hassan said that the meeting witnessed an in-depth discussion of the repercussions of wars and conflicts in the Middle East and their direct impact on political and economic stability in Arab countries, pointing to the escalation of challenges related to energy security and supply chains alongside economic pressures stemming from successive geopolitical crises.
He explained that the meeting saw the participation of representatives from 14 Arab countries, which reflects the level of coordination and consultation among Arab parliaments and their keenness to unify their positions towards issues of common interest, with an emphasis on the importance of coordination with regional groups such as the African Group and geopolitical groups within the Union, which indicates the importance of the item and may be linked to common positions of Arab parliaments regarding urgent international issues.
In his speech, Abu Hassan condemned the violations of Jordanian airspace amid the escalating military tensions in the region. He described these actions as a breach of the country's sovereignty and international law, posing a direct threat to the Kingdom's security and stability.
He also condemned displacement policies in the West Bank as a blatant violation of international law and human rights, calling on the international community to assume its responsibilities to stop these measures.
He also criticized the passing of what is known as the "Death Penalty Law" in the Israeli Knesset, considering it a dangerous escalation that undermines the chances of achieving peace.
The attendees discussed the emergency item that the Arab Parliamentary Group will submit, stressing the importance of drafting a unified Arab position that reflects the priorities of Arab countries and enhances their presence and influence in international parliamentary forums.
The deliberations also touched upon scenarios of closing the Strait of Hormuz and the repercussions that may entail on global trade movement and oil prices, confirming that any disruption in this vital corridor will directly affect global energy security and increase the severity of economic tensions.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the participants affirmed the necessity of intensifying coordination among Arab parliaments, unifying political discourse, and enhancing the role of parliamentary diplomacy in defending Arab causes and conveying the Arab point of view to the international community in a manner that contributes to building effective partnerships that serve the interests of Arab peoples.
