Tafileh, Sept 21 (Petra) -- Authorities in the southern governorate of Tafileh are accelerating preventive infrastructure measures across 50 flash flood-prone locations to protect roads, facilities, and public safety ahead of the rainy season, Governor Sultan Al-Madi said on Monday.
Speaking to the Jordan News Agency, Petra, Al-Madi said executive and service agencies are maintaining valley drainage systems, culverts, and stormwater networks. Field teams are clearing debris, soil, and silt to prevent blockages, prioritizing high-risk sites including Afra, Seil Al-Hasa, Buseira, Al-Eis, Al-Ayna, and Wadi Zaid.
Al-Madi added that emergency crews, heavy machinery, snowplows, and operational centers have been put on high alert. At the same time, shelter facilities have been reviewed to ensure rapid response capabilities during severe weather events.
Mohammad Al-Kreimeen, head of the Greater Tafileh Municipality committee, stressed that joint coordination with the Ministry of Public Works and Housing is vital to address root causes of recurring soil erosion and drainage bottlenecks rather than merely managing their aftermath.
Raad Al-Sheimat, director of the public works directorate in Tafileh, said the department has mobilized nine field teams, hired 20 heavy vehicles, cleaned approximately 240 pipe culverts, and plans to install additional box culverts in vulnerable areas.
