Salt, March 17 (Petra) -- A ceremony was held on Tuesday at the Turkish Martyrs’ Cemetery in the city of Salt to commemorate the officers and soldiers who were martyred in the Çanakkale (Gallipoli) Naval Battle on March 18, 1915, in the presence of the commander of the Central Military Zone.
Turkiye Ambassador to Jordan, Yaqub Caymazoglu, delivered a speech in which he said, "Today we commemorate the 111th anniversary of the victory in the Gallipoli Naval Battle on March 18, 1915, and at the same time we remember the souls of our righteous martyrs who wrote the highest meanings of sacrifice and devotion with their blood." He underscored the deep, historical, and fraternal ties between the Republic of Turkiye and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, noting that Turkiye cannot forget its martyrs who gave the country independence and a future with their pure lives, and we cannot overlook our Jordanian and Palestinian brothers from Nablus, Salt, and other blessed lands surrounding Jerusalem, who fought in the ranks of the Ottoman army and earned the honor of martyrdom.
He pointed out that Turkiye and Jordan today share the same vision and values in addressing regional issues, calling for an immediate halt to the destruction, extermination, and grave humanitarian tragedy facing Gaza and Palestine. They reject attempts to annex and forcibly displace the Palestinian people and remain committed to a two-state solution, while adopting the same approach regarding border security, the territorial integrity of regional states, and combating terrorism.
He added that, guided by a sense of shared responsibility and regional belonging, Turkiye and Jordan will continue to work side by side to confront challenges surrounding the region, taking steps to safeguard the interests of their peoples and enhance the security and stability of the region.
The Turkish ambassador, the commander of the Central Military Zone, and several attendees laid wreaths at the martyrs’ memorial while buglers played the Last Post.
Afterwards, the attendees toured the site, recorded messages in the visitors’ book, and recited Al-Fatiha for the souls of the martyrs.
The ceremony was attended by the Chairman of the Greater Salt Municipal Committee, Ali Al-Bataineh; Deputy Director of Balqa Police Directorate; Director of Balqa Awqaf Directorate; Chairman of the Balqa Governorate Council; senior officers of the Jordan Armed Forces – Arab Army; as well as a number of ambassadors; accredited military attachés in Amman; embassy staff; and members of the Turkish community in Jordan.
