Amman, Sept. 30 (Petra) - Economic and Social Council (ESC) Secretary-General Nazir Awamleh participated in an Arab symposium in Algiers on Wednesday, focused on leveraging digitalization to integrate Arab nations into the global economy.

Speaking on behalf of Union of Arab Economic and Social Councils and Similar Institutions (UAESCSI) Deputy President Musa Shteiwi, Awamleh outlined three strategic opportunities presented by digitalization: Building a shared Arab digital market, enabling small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to access global trade via e-commerce and digital payments, and equipping Arab youth to participate in the international remote labor market.

He pointed to several challenges to regional digital growth, including structural digital divides that keep digital activity consumer-oriented, skill shortages, fragmented regulations across data governance and artificial intelligence (AI), and heavy reliance on imported technology.

To overcome these barriers, he proposed establishing a unified Arab digital economy charter, building shared digital infrastructure, setting harmonized AI and data policies, and creating joint funding mechanisms to deepen digital inclusion for women, youth, and remote communities.

Awamleh showcased several Jordanian initiatives, including the ESC's Digital Policies Committee, the launch of an e-commerce customs center to expedite trade clearance, and targeted labor market studies on AI and Fourth Industrial Revolution readiness.

He urged governments, the private sector, and civil society to unite in establishing a cohesive Arab digital roadmap.
