Amman, April 7 (Petra) – Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Saeb Khreisat, said the continued rainfall during this period "directly" supports the agricultural season across the Kingdom, contributing to improved agricultural productivity and increased efficiency of water resources, especially given the climatic challenges facing the region.
In a statement issued Tuesday, Khreisat said the downpour has "positively" impacted groundwater recharge rates, which contribute to bolstering water reserves in aquifers and alleviates pressure on traditional water sources, particularly during the summer months when water demand is "high." On its impact, he noted the continued wet season has also led to increased water harvesting in dams and earthworks, supporting the ministry's plans to optimally utilize rainwater and store it for supplemental irrigation, especially in rainfed agricultural areas.
He added that these "favorable" climate-related conditions have contributed to improving the state of natural pastures, which "directly" benefits the livestock sector by providing natural food sources and reducing feed costs for breeders that enhance sustainability of this vital sector.
He noted increased soil moisture is a key factor in improving crop growth, mainly for grains and fruit trees, as it helps increase nutrient absorption efficiency and improve quality and quantity of production, particularly for summer crops.
The ministry, he stated, is "continuously" monitoring weather developments and working in coordination with relevant authorities to guide farmers on the best ways to utilize the rainfall by implementing sound agricultural practices to ensure crop protection and increase production.
Additionally, he urged farmers to continue adhering to the instructions issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, primarily guidelines related to irrigation management, pest control, and rainwater utilization, to contribute to a "successful and sustainable" agricultural season.
The current rainy season is "promising," provided rainfall continues at current rates, which strengthens hopes for achieving outstanding agricultural production and supporting the Kingdom's food security system.
