Amman, Sept. 27 (Petra) - Severe storms and torrential rains killed at least 56 people across northern India's Uttar Pradesh over the weekend, officials said on Sunday.

The torrential downpours damaged over 1,000 homes, according to the Associated Press, citing India's Relief Commissioner's Office.

The extreme weather was triggered by a deep depression moving inland from the Bay of Bengal, which intensified rainfall across the region.

The state recorded 66.5 mm of rainfall between Friday and Sunday, nearly nine times its seasonal average of 7.6 mm.

Home to more than 240 million people, Uttar Pradesh is India's most populous state and frequently experiences severe weather and heavy flooding during the annual monsoon season.
